Essay #2 (9/3/2009)

Prompt:

In a section of Nature we read and discussed in class this week, Ralph Waldo Emerson explains that poets “own” things in a way no one else can. He says, “There is a property in the horizon which no man has but he whose eye can integrate all the parts, that is, the poet.”

Everyone has a special talent or way of seeing the world, including you! (!!) Describe one thing in life you “own” like the poet Emerson describes–one thing you know more about or are closer to than other people. Tell about how you came to “have” this thing, and what you do with it, poetically speaking.

Hints:

  • Emerson uses the word “poet” in a general sense here–being a “poet” doesn’t have to do with sitting down and writing rhymes. To Emerson, it’s a whole way of life. Part of your paper should describe what you think Emerson means by “poet.”
  • More than half of your grade on this essay will come from your brainstorming and planning activities. Make an extensive brainstorm “idea map” and an outline of your essay before you star writing. Hand in all planning materials with your essay.
